Inside the Cold Chain Network Powering Lacrem's Growth

Share

July is National Ice Cream Month, a celebration of one of the world’s favorite frozen treats. While consumers celebrated by enjoying their favorite flavors and brands, few see the temperature-controlled supply chain working behind the scenes to keep products moving from production to freezer aisles.

For more than 20 years, Americold has partnered with Lacrem, parent company of the iconic La Menorquina ice cream brand, helping support its growth across Spain and into international markets, including the United Kingdom and the United States. The recent extension of our partnership through 2029 reflects two decades of collaboration and a shared commitment to future growth.

Building a Supply Chain Designed for Growth

As Lacrem has continued to expand its business, including achieving consecutive years of double-digit growth and growing its presence in international markets, it needed a supply chain that could scale alongside its ambitions.

Supporting that growth requires more than cold storage capacity. It requires an integrated logistics network designed to keep products moving efficiently, reliably, and at scale.

To help meet those needs, Americold provides a cold chain solution that combines strategic infrastructure, automation, and supply chain expertise across Spain.

A Centralized Hub in Barcelona

The journey begins at Americold’s facility in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Barcelona, where 100% of Lacrem’s inventory is centralized.

Serving as the heart of the operation, the facility manages large-scale frozen storage and precise case-picking activities that support national distribution. By consolidating inventory in a strategically located hub, Lacrem can efficiently manage product flow while maintaining visibility and control across its network.

Automation Designed to Keep Products Moving

Once orders are ready for shipment, automation helps accelerate product flow and improve operational efficiency.

Americold’s automated pallet preparation process retrieves and transports pallets to specialized staging areas, where loads are optimized and prepared for shipment. Products then move directly to cross-dock zones for truck loading and outbound distribution.

By combining automation with operational expertise, Americold helps streamline the movement of temperature-sensitive products while supporting the speed and reliability that growing food manufacturers require.

Building Supply Chain Resilience in Valencia

While Barcelona serves as the primary operating hub, Americold’s facility in Valencia provides an additional layer of resilience.

The dedicated safety stock facility helps de-risk regional supply lines and protect product availability throughout the Levante region and southern distribution routes. This strategic inventory positioning enables greater flexibility while helping ensure continuity of supply when demand fluctuates.

A Partnership Built for the Future

Together, Americold’s strategically located facilities, advanced automation capabilities, and integrated logistics expertise create a cold chain network designed to support Lacrem’s continued growth.

The recent extension of the partnership through 2029 marks another milestone in a relationship built on mutual trust, operational excellence, and a shared commitment to delivering results. As Lacrem continues to expand its reach, Americold remains focused on providing the infrastructure, technology, and expertise needed to help keep products moving efficiently from production to point of sale.

As food manufacturers navigate growth, changing consumer demand, and increasingly complex supply chains, Americold provides the cold chain solutions needed to scale with confidence.
