Like other central New Jersey townships, Bridgewater, NJ is rich with history and great recreation. The site of a Revolutionary War moment, Bridgewater is a quiet community that offers a number of amiable indoor and outdoor attractions that appeal to locals and visitors alike.
As a weary traveler, Washington is said to have rested on what is now known as the Middlebrook Trail. Also, on June 14, 1777, Betsey Ross’s flag made its debut and flew over Washington and his army at The Middlebrook Encampments Site. Even today this trail is popular for hiking and birdwatching.
For other outdoor pursuits, Duke Island Park, on the Raritan Power Canal, is where you’ll find softball fields, short walking trails and playgrounds. A popular summer concert series – showcasing every genre from blues to bluegrass – is held every Sunday throughout July and August.
The Heritage Trail Association of Somerset County works to preserve the history of the area. The association provides a year-round program of guided bus and walking tours, theatrical productions, and more.
